The tradeoff: the same density that makes biking convenient makes parking terrible, which reinforces the bike-first culture in a virtuous cycle. Winter biking here is very doable — the Greenway gets plowed, and the distances are short enough that even a 10F commute is manageable. Winter biking is feasible — the Cedar Lake Trail gets plowed, and the distances to downtown destinations are minimal. The Bde Maka Ska loop trail — 3.1 miles around the lake — is one of the most popular recreational rides in the city. The Greenway access makes car-free commuting genuinely practical. The tradeoff: the lake trails are multi-use paths shared with runners, walkers, rollerbladers, and dogs, and they get congested on summer evenings and weekends. Biking for transportation is excellent; biking for speed on the lake trails requires patience. Hennepin Avenue — the main north-south commercial corridor — is not bike-friendly despite its importance as a connector. Most South Uptown cyclists learn to use the residential streets parallel to Hennepin for north-south riding. The bike culture here is strong, and the combination of Greenway + lakes makes it one of the best biking locations in the city.
